The expectations were very high. The quality of work is good for someone who wants to have an initial feeling of a law firm experience coupled with an exposure into the legal framework. As it is one of the best law firms in India, I am very lucky to have a golden opportunity, this internship already makes my future bright.
Describe your first day (in 100 words).
First day was mainly filling up of documents, introduction with the team under whom you are going to intern and all relevant information regarding Dos and Don’ts. My first impression was “WOW!” the office looked amazing, there were so many associates and other partners. You get an adrenaline rush when you see a law firm of such a high scale.
How would you describe the culture within the organization (ways in which co-workers interact or don’t interact) and how does this fit with your “ideal” employer?
Kocchar & Co. has three floors specifically dedicated to itself in the building, and an office in Delhi. Associates and interns are offered individual work stations with comfortable seating arrangements along with their personal desktops. The partners and senior partners are given personal chambers and all in all it gives you a corporate office ambiance along with a spectacular view from the 10th, 11th or 12th floors. Each floor has separate conference rooms for meetings along with classy interiors giving it a 5 star ambiance.
Team strength: Each team has at least 4 or 5 associates with a partner or senior partner as the head. The people are very friendly and professional at the same time. If you ask them queries they respond with enthusiasm and will assign you quality work. It was fit as my ideal employer.
What new skills have you learned since beginning your experience?
Every experience makes you a better person and gives unlimited and valuable knowledge. This internship made me learn drafting, interpreting many laws and making reports. But for me, every internship is a new experience and helps me in learning new skills.
What type of tasks did you discover that you enjoy or excel at completing?
My main tasks were related to legal research on books and software, drafting various documents and specially reply to a legal notices coupled with various court visits and mediation and arbitration matters. If you insist, they let you read the case files and see the court arguments pertaining to any particular case you are working on.
What tasks were less attractive or fulfilling?
Every task was attractive and fulfilling as it was as per my interest.
What about your internship do you absolutely despise/hate or leaves a bad taste in your mouth?
No, the best thing about the Kocchar and Co. internship is the fact that you get to go to the court a lot and attend several arbitration and mediation proceedings. The quality of work is good for someone who wants to have an initial feeling of a law firm experience coupled with an exposure into the legal framework. You get an opportunity to draft, and the associate working over you addresses your conundrums and provides solutions.
If you were running this organization, what would you change and why?
I would suggest to have a food joint in office. We get tea and coffee but it should have a lunch counter for internees staying a bit farther from the office and accommodation can also be provided for internees.
What about your internship is the most surprising to you (i.e., what did you least expect going into the experience) and what lesson(s) can you draw from this?
It was surprising as the people are very friendly and professional at the same time. If you ask them queries they respond with enthusiasm and will assign you quality work. The work environment is not stressful as such, and you thoroughly enjoy your time sipping a delicious Cuppa by the pantry staff. Silly mistakes are not taken lightly by them but rest assured you will learn a lot coupled with sarcastic leg pulling. So by this internship I have learned many law skills and practical knowledge.
How does this internship relate to your long-term educational or career goals?
As this is one of the best law firms in India, doing internship in this prestigious law firm makes my future bright my giving me opportunity for a better career in law by giving consideration for employment.
Did the internship provide you with any insights that you hadn’t anticipated?
What recommendations would you give to other students doing an internship at this organization?
I interned at Kocchar & Co. for 4 weeks, it was working 5 days a week but occasionally the team used to come on second Saturdays depending on the senior partner’s requirements pertaining to a matter which required special attention. The timings were 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., subject to extension, if an urgent matter was there, but the team is considerate enough to let the intern choose whether to stay or not. You need to forward your CV at email@example.com and do occasional follow ups. The contact details are: Tel: +91-11-41115222, 43129300. It is advisable that you apply 3 months in advance as the numbers of applications are huge as there are interns throughout the year. And never be late in office be before time.
