International Human Rights Law is a set of international rules, established by treaty or custom, on the basis of which individuals and groups can expect and/or claim certain behavior or benefits from governments.
Hence, International Human Rights Law is that branch of public international law that aims at protecting the internationally guaranteed rights of individuals and groups against violations by state etc.
This course is intended for anyone interested in learning about human rights including; human rights educators, advocates, activists, law enforcement officers, lawyers, program mangers, research officers, leaders and members of coalitions and networks, staff of Non Governmental Organizations and Community Based Organizations.
No prior knowledge of law, international relations or human rights is required, although the course will be of interest to those who have studied or worked in these areas.
Course Instructor Profile
Dr. Fatima Waziri – Azi, is a Research Fellow and Departmental Head of Public Law at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS). Prior to joining NIALS, she worked as a Legal Associate,New York City, Administration of Children Services, Division of Legal Services where she provided documents and information to clients under the Freedom of Information Law via the New York City data base system.
She was a Legal Fellow at Transparency International USA, Washington D.C. Dr. Waziri – Azi also served as an Attorney/Senior Program Officer at The Human Rights Law Service (HURILAWS/ Olisa Agbakoba & Associates, Lagos where her designation was the women’s right and electoral issues desk.
She has a Masters in Law degree from St Thomas University School of Law; Miami, Florida – U.S.A and a Doctor of Juridical Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – U.S.A. She has authored numerous book chapters and her interest lies particularly in human rights amongst others.
Dr. Waziri – Azi is an Associate member, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), member, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), member, Association of Women in Development (AWID), member, Women in International Security(WIIS) and the International Scrabble Club (ISC)
