Managing Menstrual Health in India: An Overview

The lack of understanding and knowledge of Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) in India perpetuates myths and has propagated a culture of ignorance on the subject of menstrual health and well being. In an attempt to educate and raise awareness amongst young men and women on the challenges associated with menstruation and menstrual health, this Report presents an elaborate overview on the same, so that Right to Menstrual Health can be acknowledged as a legitimate public policy issue. Workshop on Menstrual Health Education and Training Session

LexQuest Foundation conducted a workshop for female students of Gujarat National Law University that focused on imparting skill training for conducting Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) sessions for underprivileged adolescent girls.

During the session, the trainees were also acquainted with the policy issues and the grassroots reality associated with period poverty in India. Having learnt effective and suitable approaches to address the issue of menstruation and all its aspects, they will now assist us in the field and conduct training sessions for adolescent girls in the villages of Gujarat. The Period Buddy Project Session at Adalaj Village, Gujarat

LexQuest Foundation conducted its second session at the Government Girls’ School in Adalaj Village, Gujarat. The session entailed a workshop with the girls of 7th Standard, wherein apart from discussing the biological aspect of menstruation, they were also familiarised with the necessary nutrition and hygiene requirement during ones menstrual cycle. The session also focussed on conveying the importance of a healthy and regular period, while concurrently acknowledging, and dispelling myths and superstitions related to periods in rural India. The Period Buddy Project Session at Adalaj Village, Gujarat

LexQuest Foundation along with The Legal Services Committee (under the aegis of the Center for Law and Society) of the Gujarat National Law University, conducted its first menstrual health management awareness-cum-training session at Adalaj Village in Gujarat. We engaged with the 6th grade students of the Government Girls’ School at the village. In addition to distributing sanitary pads to the class, the workshop focused on the point of menstrual health, hygiene, nutrition along with discussing the biological and psycho-social aspects related to menstruation. The Period Buddy Project: Learnings at a Teach For India Classroom

As part of LexQuest Foundation’s Period Buddy Project, we recently visited a TFI school in New Delhi’s Sangam Vihar area. Based on our conversations with the VII grade girls of the said Government Senior Secondary School, we realised that there exists a major gap in the knowledge dissemination process vis-a-vis the requisite learning standards in such classrooms, especially with respect to menstrual, sexual and reproductive health of adolescent girls.
